Let's get into the first lesson.
Are Carbohydrates The Reason You Are Overweight?
Over the years, we have been made to believe that carbohydrates are not healthy for weight loss. In fact, most people demonize carbs and are scared that if they eat carbohydrate foods, they will gain weight.
But the truth is that carbohydrates can only make you gain weight if you're eating the wrong types of carbohydrate foods or you are eating the right ones in the wrong proportion.
In this lesson, I will be teaching you how eating the wrong types of carbs are making you overweight, and the right ones to eat if your goal is weight loss.
All carbohydrates are not created equal.
In fact, there are two types of carbohydrates: some that can contribute to weight gain, and others that are less likely to do so.
If you find yourself gaining weight while consuming carbohydrate-rich foods, it's likely due to the type of carbohydrates you're consuming.
You might be curious about what distinguishes the two categories of carbs. I'll explain the difference and how they impact your weight loss journey shortly, but first, let's delve into the basics of carbohydrates.
If you don't know what carbohydrates (also known as carbs) are, they're foods that your body breaks down into simple sugars, specifically glucose. To visualize, think of them as resembling glucose D, which your doctor recommends when you are weak. That is how carbs look like when broken down in the body.
How Carbohydrate Foods Cause Weight Gain
When we eat these foods high in carbohydrates, they enter the body and become glucose, and what glucose does is to quickly increase our blood sugar levels.
When this happens, the body tries to bring the blood sugar level back to normal.
To achieve this, the body releases a hormone called insulin which removes the excess sugar from the blood and brings it back to its normal levels.
Hormones are more or less messengers that travel through your bloodstream, delivering important information to various parts of your body. There are so many hormones in the human body and insulin is one of them. The message it carries is to tell every part of your body to remove the excess sugar.
Now, the question is this: Where does this excess sugar that is removed from the bloodstream go to? Does it vanish into thin air?
Well, it doesn't vanish into thin air. In fact, some of it is stored in what is called glycogen stores, which makes it easier for your body to use for energy in case you perform serious activities like running or jumping or similar exercises.
But there is yet another problem: These glycogen stores are very small and depending on the quantity of the high carb food you ate, they can only hold a small amount of the excess sugar floating in the bloodstream.
So, what the body does once these glycogen stores are all filled up, is to convert the excess sugar into fat and store it in your body.
If we keep eating more food without giving our body a chance to empty the glycogen stores or use up the fat stored in our body, overtime we become fat.
This is why many people often label carbs as undesirable and recommend avoiding them altogether, although this perspective isn't entirely accurate and you'll know why soon.
Eating Carbohydrate Foods Doesn't Just Make You Overweight, It Leads To Something Worse
Remember that the body usually sends insulin to clean the blood sugar whenever we eat foods that are high in carbohydrates.
Now, as time goes on, our body becomes resistant to insulin. This condition is called insulin resistance and what it means is that our body no longer responds to the hormone insulin as fast as it used to when we eat a meal high in carb.
So, our body has to produce so much more insulin than it normally would to remove the excess sugar from the bloodstream and bring it back to its normal levels.
Now, this is very bad and here is why: When there is too much insulin in your blood, your body starts to store fat, even if you are not eating a lot of carbohydrates. This is because insulin tells your body to store energy, and it doesn't know the difference between glucose and fat.
In fact, depending on the severity of the insulin resistance, it can take up to 8 hours for your blood sugar levels to normalize after eating a high carbohydrate meal. This means that whatever you eat within this 8-hour period automatically gets stored as fat and if you still eat a high carb meal after that, same thing happens for the next 8 hours.
This is why when you are trying to lose weight, what you eat, how long before you eat your next meal and what you eat next are very important to get results.
Most people struggle a lot on their weight loss journey because they don’t understand this simple hack. But, congrats to you, I will be teaching you all the hacks you need to reverse insulin resistance and start burning fat seamlessly in this free course.
All you need to do is take your time and through the lessons in this course.
The Problem With Eating Carbs Doesn't End At Insulin Resistance, It Causes Something Deadlier Overtime
If you don't make changes to your diet early enough and start living healthier, overtime insulin resistance places you at a high risk of having a cluster of conditions known as metabolic syndrome.
In fact, if you are reading this lesson right now and you are struggling with any of the following below, there is a high chance you have insulin resistance:
The risk factors above are collectively called metabolic syndrome and they increase your risk of health conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke.
Now, if you have insulin resistance, it doesn't mean all hope is lost or you must completely stop eating your favorite carbohydrate meals.
You Can Still Eat Carbohydrates And Lose Weight If They Contain Enough Of This Single Important Item.
Firstly, all natural foods that contain high amounts of carbohydrates and sugars, except for honey, have something in them that helps minimize or rather control the impact of these foods in our body.
That thing is called fiber.
In fact, everything I have explained above happens when you eat mostly carbs that doesn't contain fiber.
If you eat mostly fiber-containing carbs (otherwise called complex carbs) in the right quantity, you won't experience any of the above.
Now, before I go on to tell you more about complex carbs and how to eat them for weight loss, it is very important you understand why complex carbs are actually good for weight loss.
Remember I mentioned that almost all naturally occurring foods that are high in carbohydrate contain this thing called fiber.
Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that cannot be digested by the human body. It passes through the digestive system relatively intact and provides several health benefits.
In fact, there are actually two types of fibers, soluble fiber which dissolves in water and insoluble fiber which doesn't dissolve in water.
Most of our high carbohydrate foods contain this soluble fiber and this helps a lot in making sure we don't have most of the dangerous effects of eating high carbohydrate foods, provided you eat them in the right portion.
Here is How Fiber Works To Ensure Carbohydrate Foods Don't Make You Overweight
Yes, nature is wise and understands how carbs affects our body, that is why fiber is included in carbohydrate foods to help control this problem.
If you have been struggling to lose weight on Nigerian foods, the first and most important step is cutting back on carbohydrates that doesn't have fiber (otherwise called simple carbs) and focusing more on complex carbs.
But the question remains; what are the simple carbs to avoid and what are the complex carbs to eat?
These and more I will be sharing with you in the next lesson. See you there.
